Companions on the Way – by Father Andrew

A Message from Fr. Andrew Cooley

Dear Companions on the Way,

The big news at the church office is that we have a new Parish Administrator.  She is Ginger Montalvo who has been worshipping at St. Mary’s for a few months.  See her info note below.

She brings many assets that will be a great help to St. Mary’s.  She has been a project administrator for a commercial construction company that works on military facilities; and so is used to managing deadlines, information, calendars, vendors, employees, etc. She is skilled at communication and organization.  She has also been a Campus Minister for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, and so appreciates the unique role of the Church grounded in prayer and provider of ministry in the power and name of Christ.  She also is mother to a delightful 2 ½ year old son, Vincent, who will be with her when Ginger is at work.

While she is getting oriented to the work and balancing the needs around having a child with her at work, her hours will need to be flexible.  We anticipate though, that she will be here on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at least.  As she takes on more responsibilities at St. Mary’s, and we all establish what the patterns of work need to be, those hours will expand.

I would also like to help keep a healthy balance for her on Sunday mornings.  If you have information, questions or projects for her (church business); see if you can bring those up with her during work hours or via email (parishoffice@stmaryslw.org) rather than when she is here to worship.

Join me in welcoming Ginger (and Vincent) to St. Mary’s office.  I trust she will be a blessing to all of you, as she has already been here in the office.

Be Still and Know the I AM God,

Holy-Waste-of-Time Retreat for Young Adults

Young adults in their 20s & 30s from across the Diocese of Olympia are invited to the Holy Waste of Time Retreat, an annual weekend of fun, rest and friendship. Held at St. Andrew’s House in Union, a lodge with a breathtaking view of Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains beyond, the retreat will take place August 19-21.

In the spirit of time-wasting, participants can choose their own activities: kayak, paddleboard and swim the beautiful waters of the canal; take a hike on the forest trails nearby; or simply read in the lodge or sun on the deck. We’ll also offer options like yoga, music, and art. Each evening we’ll gather to share and celebrate evening prayer and our time together will culminate with a Sunday Eucharist.

Register now through July 31 for $95 — which includes all food, lodging and activities. After July 31, registration is $110. Scholarships are available.

We would like to recognize by name all of our parishioners and those connected to St. Mary’s that serve in our military.  Please email the Parish Office at parishoffice@stmaryslw.org if you (or your child or spouse) would like to be included in this prayer list.

Lakewood Food Bank

Please carefully check the “best by” dates on cans.  The food bank will accept up to 1 year beyond the “best by” date.  In these times of high food costs and other living expenses, please continue to care for our community neighbors by donating an item of two when you arrive at church. It is so appreciated!

Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity Project

Join Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity and Friends of the late Dr. Thomas in building the Dr. Claudia Thomas Legacy House. The house will be part of a 12-unit development in the Tillicum neighborhood—a home to a future Habitat homeowner, someone for whom homeownership would not be possible without support from generous people like you. In celebration of Dr. Thomas, help us provide the stability and self-reliance achieved through home ownership for a family in need.
